The premise that Western culture has undergone a pictorial turn (W.J.T. Mitchell) has prompted renewed interest in theorizing the visual image. In recent decades researchers in the humanities and social sciences have documented the function and status of the image relative to other media, and have traced the history of its power and the attempts to disempower it. What is an Image in Medieval and Early Modern England? engages in this debate in two interrelated ways: by focusing on the (visual) image during a period that witnessed the Reformation and the invention of the printing press, and by exploring its status in relation to an array of texts including Arthurian romance, saints lives, stage plays, printed sermons, biblical epic, pamphlets, and psalms. This interdisciplinary volume includes contributions by leading authorities as well as younger scholars from the fields of English literature, art history, and Reformation history. As with all previous collections of essays produced under the auspices of the Swiss Association of Medieval and Early Modern English Studies, it seeks to foster dialogue between the two periods.

It has become a commonplace that "images" were central to the twentieth century and that their role will be even more powerful in the twenty-first. But what is an image and what can an image be? Releasing the Image understands images as something beyond mere representations of things. Releasing images from that function, it shows them to be self-referential and self-generative, and in this way capable of producing forms of engagement beyond spectatorship and subjectivity. This understanding of images owes much to phenomenology—the work of Husserl, Heidegger, and Merleau-Ponty—and to Gilles Deleuze's post-phenomenological work. The essays included here cover historical periods from the Romantic era to the present and address a range of topics, from Cézanne's painting, to images in poetry, to contemporary audiovisual art. They reveal the aesthetic, ethical, and political stakes of the project of releasing images and provoke new ways of engaging with embodiment, agency, history, and technology.

The image holds us in thrall, like a cocoon wrapped around our being. Each thread of this fantastic construction is a world we have imagined to be, and together they comprise a seemingly safe and secure habitat in which we may live. We live in worlds woven around other worlds, which exist in the one world to which we are all unknowingly subject-Earth, where we store the all the entropy produced by the effects of our weaving. Our cocoon of images won't protect us from our entropy. Neither can we be assured that a benevolent metamorphosis will follow. Yet we must fully engage with the image, as the image is our future. At a time when we know this future to be under threat, it requires of us an understanding of its workings and of its use commensurate with its power. Following an exploration of the history of unsustainability and of the concept of future, Calvelli develops a theory of the image based in Catherine Malabou's concept of plasticity. The image in plasticity is an aesthetic, relational and transtemporal tool that can be used to open and shape a future, in a transdisciplinary image making practice he calls the artefacture of wonder.
